چکیده

We present projected velocity dispersion profiles for the Draco and Ursa Minor (UMi) dwarf spheroidal galaxies based on 207 and 162 discrete stellar velocities, respectively. Both profiles show a sharp decline in the velocity dispersion outside ∼ 30 (Draco) and ∼ 40 (UMi). New, deep photometry of Draco reveals a break in the light profile at ∼ 25. These data imply the existence of a kinematically cold population in the outer parts of both galaxies. Possible explanations of both the photometric and kinematic data in terms of both equilibrium and non-equilibrium models are discussed in detail. We conclude that these data challenge the picture of dSphs as simple, isolated stellar systems. Subject headings: dark matter—galaxies: individual (Draco dSph, Ursa Minor dSph)—galaxies: kinematics and dynamics—Local Group—stellar dynamics

A photometrically and kinematically distinct core in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We present the line of sight radial velocity dispersion profile of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), based on a sample of 88 stars extending to about 1 (∼ 1.5kpc). Like the Draco and Ursa Minor dSphs, Sextans shows some evidence of a fall-off in the velocity dispersion at large projected radii, with significance p = 0.96. Surprisingly, the dispersion at the very centre of Sextans is c...

Local Group Dwarf Galaxies and the Fundamental Manifold of Spheroids

The fundamental manifold (FM), an extension of the fundamental plane formalism, incorporates all spheroid-dominated stellar systems from dwarf ellipticals up to the intracluster stellar populations of galaxy clusters by accounting for the continuous variation of the mass-to-light ratio within the effective radius re with scale. Here, we find that Local Group dwarf spheroidal and dwarf elliptica...

Blue straggler stars in dwarf spheroidal galaxies

Blue straggler star (BSS) candidates have been observed in all old dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), however whether or not they are authentic BSSs or young stars has been a point of debate. To both address this issue and obtain a better understanding of the formation of BSSs in different environments we have analysed a sample of BSS candidates in two nearby Galactic dSphs, Draco and Ursa Mino...

Numerical Methods of Star Formation History Measurement and Applications to Seven Dwarf Spheroidals

A comprehensive study of the measurement of star formation histories from colourmagnitude diagrams (CMDs) is presented, with an emphasis on a variety of subtle issues involved in the generation of model CMDs and maximum likelihood solution. Among these are the need for a complete sampling of the synthetic CMD, the use of of proper statistics for dealing with Poisson-distributed data (and a demo...

Previous searches for atomic gas in our Galaxy's dwarf spheroidal companions have not been complete enough to settle the question of whether or not these galaxies have HI, especially in their outer parts. We present new observations of the dwarf spheroidals Sextans, Leo I, Ursa Minor, and Draco, using the NRAO 140-foot telescope to search much farther in radius than has been done before. The ne...
